Pay to not get ads?
« on: January 19, 2016, 08:01:13 am »

Hi all,

Im curious if others would pay additional subscription to NOT get ads on LuLa? I would for sure, depending on cost.

In Norway two portals for photo are now using differnet strategies as to ads:
1. Portal 1: Detect Ad-blocker and hide all content from site (forum and content). Not possible to subscribe to ad-free.
2. Portal 2: Detect Ad-blocker and show a friendly reminder with two options (for the time being one can skip both and access all content):
 - Subscribe to ad-free solution. Aprox USD 9 / month. I find this a bit expensive.
 - Sho how to open Ads for the site (whitelist in Ad-blocker)

We did make a statement that is we hit 50,000 subscribers we would be ad free.  You have an idea and we will consider it.

I find ads to be easy to ignore.  If ads can bring in more revenue to this site, gopher it.

The ROI for paying for no ads does not ... uh.. add up. (snicker) for me.  ;D

I don't mind the adds on Lula.  I've visited some of the sites which post adds here - I found MOAB quite interesting.  I won't visit the Phase One site since I'm not considering a MF camera.

As long as the adds are pop-ups which need to be constantly clicked away and lead me to avoid such sites, I don't mind at all.  I find the worst sort of pop-ups those with sound (some car adds with loud engine noise) or which keep returning (my local newspaper).

I, too, find your ads to be non-intrusive. I use them when convenient and don't particularly notice them when I'm not in the market for anything.

I agree 100%. Ads on Luminous Landscape are not aggressive and I'm not bothered by them...

They are well selected, photography-related, non-agressive, interesting and informative.

I'd also like to see you go back to your original idea of having the forums part of the subscription.  You could have a 30 day access to the forum be complementary, so that folk could see how useful and fun they are - but the subscription might help keep the level of forum discourse a little higher than it has fallen to of late.

Agreed. And well placed, on the page, so as never to give any sensation of blocking the content. I certainly wouldn't pay to get rid of them.

I'm like most, I have no issues with the ads.  Unlike other sites which throw up ads for anything even if non related (and maybe even offensive), LuLa's are in good taste and certainly for some can be useful.

I like ads. Ads are relevant. Keep the ads!

Thank you for all answers. Seems like LuLa have done a great job of targeting ads. Please keep up the good work.

Sorry if I did somehow offend or criticize the LuLa content. Still it must be good to have some confirmation on direction  :)

Absolutely not. There are a lot of reasons why this would be a VERY bad idea.
