C1 v.9: Clipping in Layer Masks & Local Adjustments
« on: January 07, 2016, 01:31:27 pm »

I have not yet upgraded from C1 v.8 to v.9, but will probably do so sometime in the near future.

One thing I am wondering though is can you clip the highlights and shadows within a layer mask in v9?

It kind of annoys me that I can not in v8.

'Clip' the highlights ?
If you're asking whether you can use the HDR Highlight / Shadow tool to pull back the highlights and lift the shadows on a masked adjustment layer ( and only affect the masked area) - the answer is yes.

You can do it on a mask with the Curve tool in version 9, which you could not do in 8.

Hi Joe,

I'm not sure if I understand what you are trying to achieve. Are you e.g. trying to create an adjustment layer, say Exposure or Curve, and create a clipped result (base layer + adjustment layer = clipped)? That's not impossible, either locally or, by inverting the mask, globally.

Just in case, it is also possible to apply multiple adjustment layers that uses the same tool again, to enhance or modify the effect of lower layers + base layer.

Cheers,
Bart

Thanks Yair.  I may have to upgrade sooner rather than later.

Manoli, I was not talking about using the HDR tool, but being able to clip the highlights and shadows like you can with the levels tool, so you loose detail to pure white or black.  Pulling the bottom number from 255 (or 0) towards the center, essentially making part of the image look over- (or under-) exposed.
