Exporting/writing metadata to sidecar file for a JPEG
« on: January 04, 2016, 03:37:42 am »

LR CC (and also Bridge CC) writes metadata in a sidecar .XMP file if the image is a proprietary RAW (not DNG), but otherwise it writes the metadata into the file itself. Is there a way to force LR CC to write metadata (in particular * ratings) in a sidecar .XMP file if the image is a JPEG ?

I am asking because I have large two sets of identical images which differ only by resolution. I applied * ratings using the low-res set in LR CC. Now I'd like to transfer those ratings to the hi-res set. It would be easy to do if the ratings would be written in sidecar files. If they cannot, would you have any suggestions on how to accomplish that task ?

There's no way to force Lr to write sidecars to publicly-documented file formats. Even making the files read-only in the OS, a Bridge trick, won't work.

I suggest you look at my Syncomatic plugin. You need both sets of pictures in the catalogue and it then syncs between images based on the file names.

Thanks for the quick reply John. The plugin looked very useful, however I had problems. I'll contact you by email.
