White level experiement
« on: January 02, 2016, 04:02:10 pm »

There are a number of display standards, all with differing brightness levels. Warning, generalizations follow! Parameters of gamma has become more of less standardized to 2.2 or similarly perceptually uniform gamma functions. Gamut and color temperature can be taken care of by color management systems.

The only real hard choice to make is white level. One could use serveral profiles or display presets for varying white levels according to usage. This has drawbacks in risking banding due to a finite LUT bit depth and also the time it takes for eyes to adapt to a modified white level. Instead one could try finding out the the most versatile white level by averaging all proposed standards:

DCI-P3      48 cd/m2
sRGB        80 cd/m2
Rec.709    100 cd/m2
SMPTE      120 cd/m2
AdobeRGB 160 cd/m2

By calculating the geometric mean the most versatile white level turns out to be 94.08632 cd/m2.

Suggestions and corrections appreciated.
