rebuilding my digital darkroom office space
« on: April 22, 2006, 08:45:23 pm »

Hi Guys,

I tried seaching the forums and googled this topic...but I haven't been able to find what I was looking for. I am sure it has been mentioned here, but still I am no better off.

so, if someone has a link or information as to how to best setup an office space specific to use for image manipulation (digital darkroom) from an ergonimic and color management point of view.

How far do I need to set the monitors, I have a mix of 19"crt and 24" LCD, actually two of each. is there a "best"viewing distance. Reason I ask, is how deep do I make my desk.

I have the following equipment

3 x computers, boxes (two workstation cases, and one shuttle)
2 x 24" DELL LCD
3 x 19" CRT Diamondtron
2 x tablets (6x8 and 9x12, i think!)
1 x Imacon Photo Scanner SCSI
1 x Epson 4000
1 x Espon R800
1 x Brother Color Lasor
1 x Panoasonic B/W lasor
1 x DiskStacker

two chairs, as it would be great to be able to sit two and work, with aircon! (this is australia! and it gets hot)

the two workstations can share monitors, one runs the scanner, the shuttle will use one 19"

I have a confined space, of just over 12 square meters 3x4meter :-) it isn't easy living in the suburbs.

yes, I currently have all this gear in the plus more and it really isn't working that great! I must admit I am not that tidy, so it is time to clear out and make it work.

currently my desk is 120x240cm which I originally build for my two 19' CRT's but I have since concluded that it is too deep a desk and that I have a lot of waste space, which gets filled up with "stuff = mess" :-) and my partner isn't liking it very much.

I need some help here please,

Kindest regards

Metro Wire can do good things in small spaces.  This is a 12 foot wall.  The shelves are 18 inches deep.  $72.00 USD each at Costco in the US.  One shelf is offset to accomodate the keyboard.  I put a thin board on it later to stop the pencils from falling through.  The wheels make it easy to pull out the shelves to rewire stuff.

Osha has some info about posture, monitor height, etc.....

thanks very much for your reply eric.
I ended up buidling it myself, with a friend a good excuse to buy and use powertools :-)

the two desks with shelves cost me AUD$400 + tools :-) so double that :-) hopefully it will work otherwise I get to cut it down :-)

kindest regards
