Minolta Scan Multi Pro is dead
« on: December 28, 2015, 06:57:15 am »

Scanner bought from new but I have not used it for at least the last four years. Have plugged it in to my old imac via firewire 400 but no signs of life at all. The scanner does not do its normal high pitched mechanical whirring sound when switching on.

- the imac firewire bus says: unknown device.
- have rolled back OS from 10.8.02 to 10.5.2.
- tried Dimage, Vuescan 9.5.32 and SF software.
- replaced the firewire 400 lead.
- have ordered an adaptor so I can try plugging into imac's 800 firewire port.

Despite the above, any suggestions what else I can do? If the scanner is broken is there anywhere in UK I can get it repaired?
Many thanks,
Paul

Sony took over the servicing of Minolta scanning products. That was several years ago. Don't know if they are still repairing them today. However, these units are very sensitive and any mishandling by ANYONE in the chain of shipping to and shipping back can damage the unit. After three tries I had to throw mine in the trash. Darn shame.

Thanks John,
It's bugging me that the scanner has sat idle on the desk all this time without being used, so I want to make sure I've done all I can to get it going before deciding whether a repair is worthwhile.

There is a Yahoo group devoted specifically to Multi Pro that might be a good source of info and help:

By the way, I am in a similar situation, in a sense that I have a very lightly used Multi Pro, sitting unpacked since the last move years ago. I now see that my iMac 27 (late 2012) doesn't even have FireWire ports anymore. Is it even possible to connect it in any other way? Any adapters?

Firewire/Thunderbolt adapter works with my Nikon LS8000 and macbook pro with vuescan :)

Wouldn't that require a separate adapter FW400 to FW800 first?

I use the OWC Thunderbolt 2 dock : https://eshop.macsales.com/shop/Thunderbolt/Dock/OWC/Thunderbolt2-Dock/

and there are FW400 to FW 800 cables like this one: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTech/1394B96036/

Not an adapter, but a 400 to 800 firewire cable, yes.  I had forgotten that I use that also.

Damn, Ellis, that adapter alone is pricier than some scanners ;)
