Canon ipf6400 not detected by the router
« on: December 19, 2015, 08:54:04 pm »

Hello,
This may be more like a network problem than printing issue. I just got a Canon ipf6400 and want to have it on my network.  I connect it to my router using an Ethernet cable but the printer does not show up in the device list in the web interface of the router. Apparently, the router cannot detect the prinhter. What might have possibly gone wrong? Am I missing something?

Some info:

Router: an Asus model with Tomato firmware
I reset the IP settings on the Canon printer to defaults using the printer's control panel.
The orange and green lights turn on when the Ethernet cable connects the router to the printer.

  Thanks.

The lights indicate that you've got good 'link' so that's a win.

I think the most likely reasons are:

Your router isn't handing out IP addresses via DHCP (or it's maxed out on # of leases it's config'd for).
The default IP subnet the printer uses is not what you are using if the printer is statically addressed.
Is your router's DHCP range possibly stepping on other active addresses?
I suppose it's possible that the ethernet interface on the printer isn't turned on by default but the link light contradicts that.
Try a different cable or at least verify that that cable works.

What *are* the Canon's IP defaults?
What is the IP address of your PC?
What address range does the Asus hand out?

I'd *STRONGLY* suggest setting an appropriate *STATIC* IP address in the printer.  Once you do that, you can directly attach the printer to the computer w/o router temporarily to see if the printer (or the router was causing the issue).

Finally, I have access to the printer over the network. I don't know what happened. Perhaps because I set the IP address manually or because I made sure the cable is firmly plugged in.

making sure it's plugged in is always a good start :)
