Does Photoshop PS2 store thumnails?
« on: April 19, 2006, 10:52:25 am »

I know PS2 creates a .xmp file in the same folder as the original but Adobe bridge loads the thumbs at a fair lick and I wondered if I have a huge cache of thmbs somewhere on my PC?

PS CS2 doesn't store any thumbnails but Bridge does. Each time Bridge browses to a folder, it will generate thumbnails and collect metadata about the files. This information is stored in a central cache by default. It is optional (and recommended) to use distributed cache which will place this cache in the directory with the images. The central cache is limited in size which means older cached information will be deleted to add new stuff in order to maintain that size limit. In addition by using the distributed cache, the work Bridge has done to cache a directory remain with the files when/if you move them outside of Bridge where the central cache won't recognize the move.

Thank you for your reply and may I ask you if I use "build cache for sub folders" in the bridge tools tab, will that put the thumbnails cache in each folder rather than a central cache?
I've used windows explorer to find the central cache to no avail !

Only if you have Bridge set to distributed cache. If you have it set as a central cache, then it'll go to the central cache.

You can change between central and distributed in the options under the advanced section. There it will also tell you where the central cache is stored and let you change that location if desired.
