Venice and Florence - how wide a lens?
« on: April 17, 2006, 11:15:23 am »

My wife and I will be spending a week in Venice and a week in Florence at the end of August into September. We are travelling light so I am restricted in what camera stuff I can carry.

Using the Canon 20D, will the 17-85mm IS be wide wnough so should I consider the 10-22mm S lens as well? I know it isn't a lot of extra weight but I want to be as light and lean as possible and the less lens changing the better. Also I have a back that just loves to scream at me if I carry a lot on the shoulder or back during the day.

When I shot film, I loved using 24mm and 28mm lens. The 10-22 at 15=24mm.

Thanks

Dave

YMMV, but I've been to both and never felt the desire for anything wider than 28 mm (full-frame equivalent), which is the wide end of my standard walk-around lens.

At the risk of seeming agumentative, my opinion is that you can never have too wide a lens.  Especially since a wide zoom will always let you zoom in a little.

Or, put another way, a wide angle lens is to a photographer what a hammer is to a carpenter.

Florence maybe not so much, but those narrow Venetian canal "streets" just cry out for wide.

It might be a long time before you get to go again.

You lucky person, you.

This is important!
The 10-22 is not that expensive and not that heavy.

Thanks to all. I see the light and will make sure the 10-22mm is part of my trip supplies.

Have you considered one of the Lowe Pro range of Orion bags. These are belt packs that you wear with the compartment at the front. You have access to all of your gear and can work straight out of the bag without taking it off (good for security). It also loads your pelvis and not your back.
