Need Help! Carriage on HP Z3100 ps hits the ink service station.
« on: December 04, 2015, 10:37:27 am »

I replaced the belt and then it initializes. The carriage moves all the way to the left hand side, then moves it all the way towards the ink service station and then I get a paper jam error because the carriage runs into the service station. How can I fix this? The error i get is 86:01. Is there a way to adjust the height of the carriage so it can move above the inkwell? Any help will be appreciated.

Did you make sure the belt is exactly in the middle and centered on the exact lines on the belt?  Which replacement belt brand did you use?  Is the take-up pulley correctly installed?  Have you run the diagnostic tests?

Just some things to consider to begin with.  Need more info before I can make recommendations.

It might help to review the videos that are out there and see if you omitted any step...

Thanks so much for replying.

I bought the belt on ebay:

What is the take-up pulley?

Also how do I run diagnostic test before it initializes? When it does start it gives me the error.

Never mind I figured out what the take up pulley is. Yes I did insert it correctly.

That belt requires the use of that replacement pulley that is NOT OEM.  In my notes on repairing the ZSeries printers
(Repairing Z Series Printers) I recommend this one: (LPS Belt Replacement)

You might want to check out the article I wrote and see if anything there helps.

You can find out how to do diagnostic tests in the HP ZSeries Manual - it's the same, mostly, for all.

Service Key Combinations

Diagnostic mode
With the printer OFF, press and hold the UP and OK keys. While holding the Up and OK keys down, press and hold the Power key to turn on the printer. Hold all three keys until the Power key stops flashing, usually about 5 seconds.
Service Menu (Service Engineers Only)
From the main menu, press and hold the Up and Cancel keys.
Service Menu (For users)
From the main menu, press and hold the Down and Cancel keys.

Entering the Service Tests Menu
In order to enter the Service Utility Menu, please refer to the instructions on Page 4-60.

1 Make sure the printer is switched OFF from the power switch on the front of the printer and NOT from the power switch on the back of the printer.
2 For On-Site Engineers, hold the Up arrow key and the OK key down and switch the printer ON using the front power switch. Wait until the LED of the power switch stops flashing (usually after 5 seconds) before releasing ALL three keys.
3 Once inside the Service Tests Menu use the Arrow keys to scroll through the “Service Tests” selections. Press the OK key to begin a specific test when the required Service Test is highlighted.

The Service Tests work in a special Mode which does NOT require the full Initialization of the Printer. Therefore it is important that once you have finished with the Service Tests, you MUST power OFF the Printer and Power ON again before trying to print or before executing another Service Test.
In some cases a quick press of a button may not be recognized by the Printer. When pressing a button, be sure to press it deliberately and all the way to the bottom of its travel.
If the Printer hangs up during a test, switch the Printer OFF and restart from step 1.

Entering the Service Utilities Menu
1 Once the message “Ready” or “Ready for paper” is displayed on the front- panel, press the Menu key. For information regarding the front panel buttons,

To have the user to perform certain Service Utilities, once inside the “Main Menu”, press the Down arrow key and the Cancel key together. You are now in the Service Tools Menu.

For On-Site Engineers, once inside the “Main Menu”, press the Up arrow key and the Cancel key together. You are now in the Service Menu Menu.

Use the Arrow keys to scroll to the “Service Utilities” menu option and press the OK key.

Use the Arrow keys to scroll through the “Service Utilities” selections and press the OK key to begin a specific operation when the required Service Utility is highlighted.

If the printer is not used for 135 seconds, the printer exits out of the Service Utilities Menu and you must repeat the above steps to enter Service Utilities again.
In some cases a quick press of a button may not be recognized by the Printer. When pressing a button, be sure to press it deliberately and all the way to the bottom of its travel.

See if you can access the system errors.  Find out what errors the printer is reporting.

You might have a simple Servo error:  73:YZ in which case Power Off the printer and disconnect the power cord.
Wait a minute, then reconnect the cord and power on the printer again.

Sometimes this fixes a lot of things.

Find the error codes and see what is being reported by the printer.  Best way to understand the mechanics of what the problem is.

Beware that if you run the scan axis diagnostics test, one part will fail - it's a bug in the software - just keep going.
