Why are my files getting bigger and bigger?
« on: December 03, 2015, 04:47:06 pm »

I really feel stupid asking this but I've got Tiff files on my hard drive that are upwards of 2gb in size. They're just single images, no pano's and they don't need flattening. They're from a Nikon D810 so they're sizeable to begin with but not huge. I saved them as 16 bit Tiff but all the same the size is huge.
Any ideas why?

Many thanks.

I can think of two possibilities:
1. The TIFF files have been saved with layers (although you do say they do not need flattening so that is unlikely)
2. The RAW camera files have been opened in Photoshop as smart objects then saved to TIFF from there. This gives a bigger file than a straightforward open as a background layer then save to TIFF

You're welcome.
A quick "flatten image" before saving as TIFF will take out the smart object and reduce file size if they are taking up too much space.

I agree with cpking. File size can reduce when you remove the layer.

All true but...considering the time and money that you have invested in this ridiculous hobby,
a new bigger HD is relatively inexpensive.
