Well, it's official, there was something disasterous developing in what had become one of the best fora on Photography.

I hope it get's bought!

I'll miss the Pro exchange!

So what's next?

Hi andrew,

This is an obvious possibility. I did send a letter to RG to get a package if it is not indeed sold and to see if one could gert a business model for the size forum it has been.

I'd be prepared to donate a modest fee toward costs when/if Michael finds his bandwidth, emails re passwords etc get too much.

I think we should just let it grow for now. We should be able to self-moderate.

I'll have to get used to the geography of this site and see how color calibration goes with printing. I have just got an HP 8750.

Thing is that if this forum were to become as large and diverse as the Rob Galbraith one then it could well run into problems that I have no doubt MR does not want, need or have time for.

I like this site like it is, an extension to the main LL site, rather less gear head and far more acutal shooting based, kinda aimed at those who really love photography not just the talking about it. The fact that the vast majority of photography talked about is landscape/wildlife/outdoor gives this site a very fresh feel compared to other more diverse and most certainly gear for the sake of gear-centric discussions on other sites.

What I enjoyed about Rob Galbraith was the level of professionalism of the discussion there, it was very pro orientated, pro gear in a pro working place for pros and the information there was specific and relevant on the whole. I rarely saw the amatuer wannabee zealots posting and answering information based on 'what a bloke in the pub told me' that is so prevelant on more amatuer based sites such as photo.net or FM where it can be very mixed and it is hard to work out who actually knows what they are talking about. A number of big names used to answer there, a post on the canon 1 series forum that asked for Chuck Westfall invariably got an answer from him eventually if it was relevant, Michael Tapes used to post, a spokesman from Microsoft, and others that I can't remember of the top of my head. It had a certain level of professionalism that drew posts on behalf of big corporations, a level of integrity that was much needed in a world where 'I saw it on the internet' is given far too much credence.

Shame it had the censorship issues that clouded over what was probably the best pro forum resource on the internet today.

Hi Pom,
I have sent an email to MR explaining where we are and so he can make any decisions as to how he wants his site to react..

I have suggested a sum say $30-150 per annum to be credited in whole or part to items purchasable from LL as a way to finance extra bandwidth if necessary and deal with extra emails!

Meanwhile I know that RG is trying hard to make a deal with someone with resources to take over his forum. In event of that not going through I will investigate a business model to do so myself.

Somehow the community has to keep going. If needed, I would be willing to set this up and put together a number of moderators to share the effort.

Meanwhile, we are here and so far I see no dangers to the character of the forum. MR focus on practicality in his writings and reviews should carry through.

If however, it was necessary, I guess MR could simply expand his fora to contain the necessary sections in order to keep the character of the existing forum focussed on photographing scenes, characters urban and in nature.

MR is away at the moment so nothing can happen until he returns. Meanwhile, only pros would have the insight to come to LL forum to browse and post!

I haven't been a big poster here, but there's not a word of MR's articles that I've not read and I like it here for it's unique expression of what he finds works, at least for him!
