I don't know what's going on, but the disaprearance of Rob's forum would be a great loss for the online photographer community...

What's going on? It's all here:

[a href=\"http://luminous-landscape.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=10389&st=0]http://luminous-landscape.com/forum/index....opic=10389&st=0[/url]

It's called acting like a major censor, banning folks left and right and losing a lot of valuable photographers while your name is being dragged through the mud on other sites to the point that having a forum like this isn't worth the time or money. In other words, Rob and Mike self imploded.

That on-line community has other, better more calmly run places (like here on LL) to meet and talk. So, no great loss.

I understand what you are saying, but unfortunately I don't believe that you are correct.

After the LL forums closed down for a month or so, it took weeks for the discussions to start again, and they never really have reached the depth they had before.

I just don't believe that enough of the contributors at Rob's will join here.

Although LL is just one click away from Rob's, things are just not the same, and contributors know and feel this very quickly.

LL might have a lot of registered members, but very few people post in the end, right?

I really hope that I am wrong, but feel that I am most probably right...

Bernard

I recall the downtime. The new forum software is really sweet and much more robust than Rob's.

I hope that those refugees from RG's forums will find their way over here. They have to migrate somewhere which wasn't the case when these forums were down. But maybe that's wishful thinking on my part.

I have to disagree with that. Not on the fact of discussion depth, but that of the reason. All of the key players that were involved in those techy discussions are still here (short of a couple, but they left or don't partake as much due to other reasons than the forum) and still post. I think people have just moved away from obsessing over details and more towards the craft. I think it would be fair to credit Michael with starting that via his articles.

Never heard of forums selling before, but it's not impossible. The issue would be maintaining it after the sale. Unless the new owners make people very aware of the change and do a dang good job running it, I don't see it doing anything other than die.

Then there is the issue of search engines. For obvious reasons, the name will probably change or at the least the URL will. Bye-bye name recognition and search engine ranking.

I don't see this succeeding. When a site owner abandons a site or part of a site, it generally means its death.

Most people will probably migrate to DPReview and Fred Miranda's forums. Hopefully, the better contributors will seek something better than what those two sites can offer and maybe come here.

Rob Galbraith explains his reasons here:

Don't why this link isn't on his home page.

Anyone seriously interested in participating in an online photo community will search out the few resources available and find their way over here, IMHO. There's a couple of us in this thread.

I agree. Started with DPReview a few years back and that place is a breeding ground for idiots and trolls. Rob Galbraith's forums has been a good resource for me over the years as I found myself going from the film world to digital with little experience. Have to say I learned alot while I was there, but it's sad to see the forums go. Having been in the web host industry for many years, I never heard of a site just selling the forums. I frequent this place from time to time looking for lens reviews and field reports on new gear. I'm sure I'll find this my new home as I am starting to like landscape photography now that I dumped my tax refund on a 400mm f/4.6L. Anyways, looks like a good bunch of folks here. Hope more from Rob's will come over.

This is a very unique fourm, very very knowledgable, but also very imtimidating.  People here can be highly helpful, but also very brusque, which will be offputting for new comers.

Brusque? I guess so. It's no were nearly as bad as most other places but it can get brusque from time to time although it has gotten quite a bit better in that regard since I first started visiting.

The last few incidents of bruskivity we perpetrated by newcomer trolls seeking to incite.

This place has been peaceful and civil for many month.

I do realize, that few of the proud members of this forum think that RobGalbraith Forum's demise is no great loss. I could not disagree with you more.
  The quality of questions and the answers especially for medium format are/were in my opinion not even in the same ballpark. Before you disagree with me, do take a look at  this question which was posted by another poster in THIS forum, who posted the same question in RG forum, other than my response nobody helped him out, please do check it out and read the quality and detail of replies in RGForum. I am NOT putting down LL forum or any other forums, but as Bernard (who also posts in RG) said in starting this thread, even though quite afew major posters have abondoned volutarily or involuntarily the RGForum, still demise of RGForum is an enormous loss to the professional photographer. See for yourself in the following links;

It wasn't Rob or his forums and it wasn't the severe censorship that make it a great place. It was the people who posted (despite all the locked posts and banning). I don't see how the same group couldn't be resurrected here or elsewhere. Mark and James have received deserved credit for making the MF forum "the" place to go for answers and meaningful discussions. After getting banned, what happened to that one forum? It went downhill in about a week. What carrot is needed to get posters like that to hang elsewhere? (well for one, they don't have the choice of posting on RG even prior to it's death). Now they do. Hopefully the death of RG will be a hiccup until a better location is found, one where guys like Mark and James can discuss what they know without having to worry when their membership will be pulled for some silly reason.

The RG link is dead.

Why not give this place a try? Sounds like you're DOA at RG anyhow. What have to got to loose?

The LL Forum is doing just fine and services a somewhat-defined purpose. If you want to extend that, you have the opportunity. What good does it do to lament RG and dis this place?

Well, well
I've not followed thus understood why some of the great photogs contributors to RG forum have been banned...
All I know is that I will miss the past 3 years with this forum, I learned a lot, tried to help when I could.
All good reasons for me to find another "home", I hope I'll find it here...

Best to all

As far as I am concerned, the Galbraith forum had the best "list of forums" that suits my needs - it became easy to quickly get to a forum that would address an issue I was interested in.  Hopefully, the forum and people will survive.

Interestingly, the existing threads can be still viewed - however you cannot add to a thread:

My sense of justice is deeply satisfied.  It's a darn shame though that RG ruined his own forum.  One got the sense that he never really liked having a forum ... that it was for him just one big PITA.

OT I know but I'm afraid the RG's Forums were largely responsible for their own demise.

Many Pro shooters stopped visiting due to overhand moderation etc.
Nobody wants Forums to degenerate to some of the childish antics seen on a lot of other places (no names mentioned but I'm sure readers of this post know exactly what I mean).

I know several Pro shooters who were BANNED for either posting problems with gear or equipment that the advertisers / sponsors of the Forums produced, and others were banned just because of disagreements with some type of testing methodology.

I hope some of the previous shooters have now found a home here and this Forum can concentrate on the much more important aspect of our profession -- Taking Pictures.

(Mods I know this is OT - perhaps you can collect all the threads about Rob G's Forum and move them to the appropriate place. This topic is of course of serious interest to large numbers of Pros who used to visit those Forums regularly).

Thanks

Perhaps the forum here could add a Photojournalism area for some of the refugees. We are RG are all types of shooters, but there are some photojournalists.

RG did not demise, its more like undergoing meta morphosis. Will it be a butterfly or Godzillla? ;-)  I dont know, but I will find out. RG has stood out as a place where pro shooters could problem solve, and industry reps could visit and interact.

I shoot some landscape work, and have about two exhibitions a year, but Im also a full-time pro and RG was a best match of expertise and friendly folks who were knowledgeable.

I also like LL for my fine art surfing, and to argue 'what is art,' but lots of times, I need to FTP my assignments to NY and hit a snag, so its off to RG I would go ...to learn and have comraderie with other folks.

RG, to me, was more useful than DP review, except for DP's camera reviews and tests, and more pro / technical / corp-arch-PJ than here where art seems to be the topic de jour. I do enjoy coming here, just a different flavor, and rightly so.
