I don't need one yet, but I was looking on Ebay for maintenance tanks for my 9890. I see you can 2 "Compatible" tanks for under $25 shipped. So half the Epson price.

Any experience with these? Aren't these just tanks to hold used ink?

Thanks!

Just get block sponges or pads and a chip resetter for under $20.

I use the empty carts from inkjet mall for my 9890 and refill with monochrome ink. The new ones work great and seem to fit a LOT better than previous models that had some play in the spacing. I reset the chips with their chip resetter.

What Dan said.  My 9800 accepts maintenance tank chip resetting without problem.
Chip resetters may be available from CIS Associates.

Super! Will do. Don't need one yet, but I like to have supplies ready!

Does the resetter work with my original Epson Tank CHIP, or do I need to buy replacement chips first?

Does this look right?

Works with a box-stock Epson tank. I refill the Maintenance Tanks with cotton balls from the drug store. The resetter also resets the MIS Associates "Funnel Fill" carts.  I don't know if it resets stock Epson ink carts.  I've never tried since they're much more difficult to refill than the Funnel Fill carts.

I've been using CIS systems and third party inks on a half dozen printers for well over a decade with zero problems, other than a heavier wallet.

Yes, by all means, purchase the chip resetter from CIS as previously mentioned.  If you have ever worked with an Epson 7600/9600 or an Epson 4000, and if you happen to have any maintenance tanks left from those printers they are also compatible with the 9900.  Not sure about the 9890, but I suspect that might also be the case.  I've been using chip resetters for all of my large format Epson printers' maintenance tanks for many years, but I also keep a new tank in stock in case a chip refuses to be reset properly.  At present I have 4 reusable tanks, all reset and ready to go.  As far as the padding or other suggestions, I have not used any of these items since approximately 2007, with absolutely no issues.  If I were about to move the printer for some reason I would remove the tank first to prevent any slopping of the ink.  Other than that there is no problem at all using a tank without any sort of padding etc.  At least that has been my experience through three different printer models.  Of course if you wish you can also use feminine hygiene pads.  As I recall they work very well also.  So off the pharmacy it is, no problem  ;)  Hope this helps.

Be aware that chip resetters are printer model/line specific.  For example, the old 9800 series uses a different chip resetter than the 9900 series---even though they share the same maintenance tank models!  Make sure you have the correct chip resetter for your printer.  I use recycling materials (maintenance tank refills) from Tastar Supply, who also sells maintenance tank recycling "kits" and chip resetters.

I've also been able to use an old 4800 printer to "reset" tanks.  I've used the old chip resetter for the 48/78/9800, place the tank in the 4800, fire it up.  Remove the tank and then it works in the 9900.  Go figure. 4800 refuses to die, and is the world's largest chip resetter.  I've since acquired the new 9900 chip resetter and admire its small and sleek design compared to the 4800.   ;D

HA!  LOL!  I just recycled my 4800. I should have kept it!  :)
