Equivalent Hahnemuhle of Canson Platine fiber rag
« on: November 19, 2015, 08:05:15 am »

Hi, what would be the Hahnemuhle equivalent of Canson Platine fiber rag? I love the Canson paper but we have had a lot of delivery and quality issues with Canson Infinity products here in Barcelona for the past year or so, and I am tired of it. Thanks for your answers. Marie

Hi, what would be the Hahnemuhle equivalent of Canson Platine fiber rag?

Hello Marie,

There will be no exact match with this paper but the closest are Hahnemühle Photo Rag Pearl and Photo Rag Baryta. All three are cotton papers, OBA free and have that soft gloss/luster look, although the "pearl" is a bit less glossy than platine. That said both papers from Hahnemühle are slightly heavier (315gsm and 320gsm) and have a bit more texture.

The paper that can be called a clone of it is the: https://www.felix-schoeller.com/en_en/business-unit/photographic-digital-printing-papers/products/j23000-true-rag-silk-305.html
Rumor has it that Canson papers are coated by Felix Schoeller.
Main problem, nobody knows where you can buy it. It could well be distributed with other brand labels on it like some Felix Schoeller products appear with a Hahnemühle sticker but I have not yet found a distribution of this product. Geraldo is right, the HM varieties mentioned are probably the most practical alternative.

Met vriendelijke groet, Ernst

Hahnemühle Photo Rag Pearl is quite similar in my mind. While I've not had much trouble with Platine in cut sheet or roll, I do very much like, and think in similar ways about, the Hahnemühle Photo Rag Pearl. I suppose I'd buy the Hahnemühle Photo Rag Pearl over Platine if there were no price differential.

I use a lot of h photo rag pearl and pr baryta and the brighter fine art pearl. all great, but all have more texture than Platine and only the fa pearl has as white a paper base. The new hah baryta satin is the closest. I like it. It has a very close texture to platine but is a little shinier. I still think Platine is the finest of them all for prints under say 20x24 inches in size, especially black and white, and no oba.

Thanks to all of you for your inputs. I'll try the Pearl then, and may be the Baryta. Marie

Dag Jan,

So should I ask Dick Bol on Monday whether Arca has the FS J23000 relabeled in their catalog?  No sizes mentioned yet.

For Deanwork,

I'm wondering why you prefer not to print larger than 20x24 with the Canson Platine?

I'm looking for an oba free paper to do very large prints which will be mounted to dibond with a protective laminate. I'm looking at 44x96" sizes or possibly larger even if possible. I've been primarily using IGFS and then the Canson Baryta Photographique until now for prints up to 24x36 and 12x48. I'm looking to get away from the baryta alpha cellulose mostly due to OBA's though I'd prefer the same smoothness or lack of texture (not that this will matter much with the laminate though, just a preference for the smoother baryta look which will show for smaller prints behind glass). So apart from the Platine, if anyone can recommend an OBA free paper like the barytas I'm all ears.

Thanks,

Brian

Oh I do print big with the Platine all the time. It is just that I prefer to make my smaller bw and color prints with the platine, as apposed to the Hah papers that have more obvious texture. But they are all great on prints larger than 16x20. For prints that you hold in your hand I still feel Platine with a couple of light coats of hahnemuhle spray is the best I've seen of this type of media.
