Cache River, Illinois, in the rain
« on: November 13, 2015, 12:12:07 pm »

Southern Illinois has swamp and wetlands left over from when the Ohio River changed course. The residual river system, very small, includes the Cache River and tributaries, and it used to contain a great forest. Almost all of the old growth has been clear-cut down for timber, with subsequent drainage for farmland, with only 3 or 4 extremely old (1,000 year) bald cypress left. The Cache River and land immediately around it has been turned into a national and state wildlife refuge.

The day that I was on the Upper Cache trails, it rained.

Rain doe’s Good to Your Photograph, if not to Photographer. I like Your Pastel Color Palette. The Feeling of Autumn.

Thanks. I liked the mist coming off this small river.

The other thing rain is hard on is the STM lens or camera. I had the camera tucked under my jacket and whipped it out for quick shots. It went on strike a few more shots after this photo. I gave it a rest, turned off, took out battery, took off lens, re-installed battery and lens, turned on, and it worked. I will have to bring a lens hood and improvised rain cover next rainy day. The pancake lens (EF 40mm f/2.8 STM, an incredible bargain and very good landscape lens for full-frame, and it weighs "nothing" = 135 grams) itself doesn't stick out enough from the camera body to use a pre-cut plastic rain cover like the Optech baggies.

This is a very interesting area and ecosystem group, I haven't shown the cypresses yet. Closest "city" is Metropolis IL on the Ohio river, and yes, there is a statue of Superman (also not photographed because I was out trying for "good light" - oops! - any light).

Yes, nice mist. I might have emphasized it by including less sky.

Optech baggies are wonderful! I always carry one.

I think you found it. Except for the dance with sensitive equipment, I prefer to shoot under conditions like this. You've captured a very moody scene.

Lovely to see a pic in the rain - very nice, and captures the autumn feel.

I've always liked the rain on water...adds a nice feeling of "real."

+1 to the earlier comments. I very much like your photograph. I could immediately 'hear' the rain upon viewing it. I like that a lot.
