Epson P800 and "pizza wheel" marks
« on: November 13, 2015, 10:41:41 am »

I have read through various threads on the P800 and a few people mention pizza wheel marks, but there are also some comments
that the marks don't occur with the fine art front load path.

Not having a P800 yet, I am wondering where the wheels are and if they are engaged in all paper feed options, or only some?

Thanks for any illuminating information.

Having had them with my 3800 PW marks are a $%^& PITA to remedy. Some papers, especially udder a heavy ink load start to distort and contact the wheels.  the larger the sheet, the worse the distortion.

In addition there are copy variations between printers - one can have an issue with paper x, 12 others not. It's a crap shoot as to how your printer does with your fave papers and your typical pic and print size...

The front path, like the 38xx avoids the PW all together, but is a pain to use.  After trying every remedy known to man I resorted to removing mine.

Will never by another printer w/o vacuum hold-down.

how *exactly* did you remove the wheels?  it looks moderately easy from the top as the shaft the wheel rides on is actually a spring.  Did you just pull up w/ needle-nose's or was there disassembly involved?

I see wheel marks on mine sometimes but only 1 wheel-pair

Hi Glenn,

I just checked my P800 and the pizza wheels are used on output with both the front feed and sheet feed. They do
not contact the paper while it is feeding.

I also examined some prints I made recently and see no evidence of pizza wheel marks. These prints are on
Canson Baryta Photographique(11x17 and 13x19), Epson Exhibition Fiber(17x22) and Moab Slickrock Metalic Silver(8x10).

So far I am a very happy owner with NO regrets.

I can't recall exact procedure, but found on google and really just involved a surgical clamp (envision small locking vise grips). IIRC I also taped a small but powerful rare earth magnet to the nose to help prevent slips.  Was happy to see the damn things hit the trash bin.

Same here but to stop having print heads landing on my preferred papers.

Stephane: What papers are giving you head strike issues?

Hahnemuhle Fine Art Baryta. Just that one, really. I just love that paper but have gone back to Epson Premium Luster because the printer cannot keep FAB flat.
