Laptop for tethered capture with CaptureOne
« on: November 05, 2015, 12:34:08 pm »

I am in the market for a laptop (PC) for tethering to my Canon 5DSR with CaptureOne.  Will a PC with a 256GB SSD, 8GB
Ram, and Intel Core i5 processor do a good job?  Any recommendations?

Thanks,
Mary

8GB of ram is definitely on the low end for tethering with a 50mp camera.

Here is an article about Capture One and Computer Hardware.

Mary,

I tether in the field with a 60MP Phase and Nikon D810 to C1, with a Surface Pro 2 and 3.  Both are 8GB machines, with 256 GB of ram and i5.  For straight tethered capture, I think you are fine, but as Doug mentioned 8GB will not get far for processing out the files.  But to go from camera to laptop, view at 100%, show to client you are fine.

You can read a lot more on Ken Doo's blog, about the Surface Pro and tethering.  Ken kinda wrote the book on it.   ;)

Hi Mary,

That should be a useful configuration for tethering (the  16GB memory helps), and for some postprocessing (although a larger display helps for that). I assume that as GPU it uses an NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 750M 2GB GDDR5, which is a moderately capable one (faster is always nicer, but the choices are usually limited in a Dell configuration), and I assume that Capture One can make good use of it, since nVidia GPUs are usually the best supported ones with frequent driver updates if necessary. The XPS line of machines are usually decent machines.

Here is a useful list of GPUs, with a ranking, which may be of use when you are given a choice.

Cheers,
Bart

Thanks for the link.  This PC has the NVIDIA GE Force GTX960M 2GB, which I don't see listed.
