Cutting Edge

Juvenile Black Skimmer - unfortunately had to shoot at a high ISO (1600) to get a decent shutter even with a good pan...but I do like the abstract quality of this shot.

Fine shot, Chris.

I've only seen black skimmers in action once, years ago in Louisiana. My recollection is that the lower bill is pretty much completely submerged through an entire "skim." Perhaps yours is a little afraid to get right close to the water. Is that what pegs it as juvenile?

I agree with you about the abstract pattern. It makes this image stand apart from the crowd.

They make a run pattern and in the first part of the run, they extend the lower bill into the water just enough to emit a "phosphorescent" glow which brings the smaller fish to the surface. On the second run, they further immerse the lower beak and when they make contact, the upper beak closes down for the kill. I didn't get any catches but this is a shot with a full capture mode extension.

This is my first experience shooting one of these guys and I find it to be a unique experience..now if the bloody sun would come out.

Good shots, the first one is fantastic, even without the sun. The repeating pattern of the wavelets is fantastic.
The info about the skimming technique is very interesting.
