Comparing gamuts of Epson 7800 and P800
« on: October 31, 2015, 06:08:07 pm »

I have an old Epson Stylus Pro 7800 (I guess they're all old by now) that I am considering "refurbishing."  In needs all new inks and a new waste tank, a network card and perhaps a new cutting blade.  I have run a cleaning and nozzle check with old inks and have no clogs. However, for only $100 more I could get a new P800 and live with 17x22.

I have downloaded profiles for both printers and a variety of papers from Epson, Canson-Infinity and Ilford. I am comparing the gamuts using Apple's ColorSync Utility in both Lab and Yxy and finding that the 7800 has a constantly larger gamut in most areas particularly in blues and greens. I thought the cyan ink was the same, so the vivid magenta should give better blues and the improved yellow should do at least as well in the greens. Plus the new Epson inks that claim much better blacks.

Am I missing something here?  Is ColorSync Utility showing me everything or do I need to get a better gamut display app?
