Stay on the Road
« on: October 08, 2015, 08:42:15 pm »

I rounded a bend in the road and came upon this scene, perhaps my favorite of the "Spanish Moss" shots. I had just hiked down a short trail through the wood and came to a photography blind, like a deer blind but for a different sort of shooting. I went to open the wooden door, struggling with the latch and when it finally creaked open, a small viper was just inches from my hand! I hot footed back to the car; thus the title of the photograph! I like the illumination of the road and the way in which the light catches the edges of the moss. Nikon D800E, Nikkor 28-300 at 68 mm, 1/60 sec, f/11, ISO 200. — at Savannah National Wildlife Refuge.

Rich and luxuriant vegetation! It could be very a haunting place under a different lighting.
Well seen.

A very beautiful scene, well captured.

But yikes! You almost paid a big price for it. Could you tell what kind of viper it was? It sounds like the kind of habitat favored by copperheads.

Didn't stick around to look closely! It was little, no more than a pencil in girth, triangular-ish head, pale yellowish/tan color with some sort of pattern on the back.

Possibly a copperhead? BTW, lovely photo.
