Is there such a thing?
« on: October 02, 2015, 06:13:31 am »

I was wondering if there was such a thing as a USB drive with an SD card slot that automatically (software installed on the drive?) backed up anything on the card when inserted, leaving out the need to carry a Mac/PC? And if there is, any recommendations?

Many thanks in advance

Hi,

Not automatically, you get a chance to select what's being copied (e.g. leaving out the things that were already copied earlier), but these devices work great. I have an older version, purchased a driveless unit, and mounted an HD of my choosing. Backups are made relatively fast, e.g. while I move to another location.

Cheers,
Bart

Western Digital makes a portable drive that does exactly that. I haven't tried it yet but I plan to do so very soon.

+1 on the Hyperdrive - get an empty one and put a SSD in it - the faster file copy, the longer battery life, and the shockproof drive is in your best interest.

I got one of these recently which allows me to use a phone or tablet to back files from an SD card up to a hard drive or another card. A cheap [£/$28], small and quite versatile solution to backing up with minimal weight/size. Does other things too like charging your phone, streaming....

HyperDrives. Get an empty and put in the drive of your choice. Drive installation takes about 2 minutes.

I have two with an SSD in one. No difference in download speed between my pair, but a bit longer battery life. Since I had forgotten the proper USB cable, I ran mine this last month using an external AA battery pack with little problem.
