5D - strange image problems
« on: March 24, 2006, 07:47:44 pm »

I just got my 5D and LUVIN IT!  Welcome back to true wide angle!

But, I've got a few images that have strange dark blemishes.  One on the top right and the other on the bottom left (originals attached).  I was using a tripod and both images are ISO 250 @ 1/15th and either f25 or 36.

There are only a few images like this and most are ok... similar in setup.

My only thought is that there may have been some dirt or dust on the filter and it could have rotated around but does seem odd.

I ran some tests today and the problem doesn't appear.

Your thoughts?

Thanks,
Kelly

They both look perfectly round, but out of focus, as if a drop of some liquid might have been on the filter. In the second one there are also two tiny spots in the sky above the highest mountain, a little to the left of center. These, too, seem to be perfectly round and fuzzy, as if they are much tinier drops of a liquid. Was it perhaps raining?

The spots in they sky is dust on the sensor... a good number of images have the same thing and after cleaning they disappeared.

It was raining that day but I was careful and use a lens hood.  You might have something though.  I've tried the 5D further tonight at various shutter & aperture settings and have not come up with any images with this problem.

At any rate I don't think it's a problem but thought I'd get some other opinions.

Kelly,

They look like an object on the front lens element. I have done a lot of photography in outback Australia and when flies land on the lens, they look just like the first shot. The second shot looks more like a finger/part of a strap/larger insect/some other decent-sized object in front of the lens.

Hope this helps.

Hi Kelly,
I read what everyone else suggested and since I've had a similar problem, I'll throw in 2 cents worth.
I don't know which lens you used for the shot? When I received my 5D and 24-105, it was apparent immediately to me that at f=4 and at 24 mm - the lens does vignette. Even though both photos show a smudge of some sort, I am just wondering if you are seeing some vignetting?
Take a raw file into Camera Raw and Correcting for vignetting in ACR couldn't be simpler. On the "Lens" tab in
ACR, there's a section called "Vignetting" with an "Amount" slider bar.
Simply slide the bar until you see the dark corners lighten up to blend well
with the rest of the image. If the region over which it lightens isn't quite
the right size for your particular image, there's also a "Midpoint" slider
which adjusts it.
If this works great if not; just a suggestion.
