A7rii and super wide angle lenses ...
« on: September 30, 2015, 06:41:39 pm »

Finally arrived the 12mm Voigtlaender in my bag. I was very sceptical from reading about smeared edges on the a7r and very surprised HOW good this lens performs on the a7rii. even wide open the lens is tack sharp, only the extreme corners are slightly soft, which disappears completely after stopping down to f6,3 or f8. But even f5,6 is already very good over the whole frame.
Same to the voigtlaender 15/4,5 v3. Next i will buy the 21 f4, if thats similar good i will sell my trielmar wate...

thanks for that information rainer, i was looking at the 15mm recently with interest and it's good to have some critical user feedback.

I'll be surprised if the Voigt 21/4 doesn't smear in the corners. My Contax RF mount Zeiss 21/4.5 (actually f/4)—similar design to the Voigt—is a mediocre performer outside the center on my A7r2. OTOH, I hope the Voigt works well…surprises can be good.  :)

Hi,

My guess is that the new Voigtlanders are redesigned to take the Sony cover glass into account…

Best regards
Erik

Yep, this is already true of the current M mount version of the 15/4.5. The 21/4 is an older design but I imagine it too will get an update now that Cosina is curtailing Voigt M lens production.

Will be keeping a close eye on these.

I hope they're sharp, aberration-free and can do justice to the 42MP sensor and any future high-resolution sensors.

Rainer,
Canon 11-24L is the best super wide angle. I'm selling my many wide-angle 14-24nikkor, 18mm nikkor, 24mm 1.8sigma, etc after I acquired 11-24L.

Nice edges, and virtually no lens flare.

Except it's only f/4.

The Nikon 14-24 is a stop faster and has almost no coma aberration, making it ideal for night landscapes with pinpoint stars. I'm not sure how the 11-24 compares.

Just announced:

http://www.sonyalpharumors.com/official-voigtlander-launches-three-new-wide-angle-native-full-frame-e-mount-lenses/
That 10 mm sounds quite interesting. 371g. I guess a lot depends on price and performance but I am guessing that it will be more affordable than the Canon 11-24mm, and hoping that making it prime will allow them to keep quality high?

Nothing is free from aberration. That’s what RAW processors are for.

Some lenses come pretty close.

Re: RAW processors - that's the problem with third-party lenses. You can't get a plugin or profile for lens correction of a third-party lens (e.g. 11-24 on Sony A7r), unless you want to use ACR or some other generic RAW converter instead of the camera-specific one, and I find that Canon's DPP or Sony's converter get better results out of their own cameras than the generic converters do. Distortions I can tolerate unless shooting buildings or other things with straight lines, but I can't stand chromatic aberration. And the sliders never work, since the aberration is rarely linear across the field.

None of mine do, but the Chromatic Aberration checkbox in C1 continues to astonish, though the separate Blue Fringing slider seems more of an incantation to me—I have yet to see any visible change after setting it to 40 or 50.

Hi,

You can perhaps also describe it with some words? A thousand pictures don't tell the story…

Best regards
Erik
