Epson 9880 Weird printing error *** WITH PICTURES ***
« on: September 22, 2015, 03:52:16 pm »

Hi folks!,

I am a new to this forum and to large format printing. I made this same post a few days ago, but did not handle posting the images correctly and so nobody could see what I was talking about. I made the images in pretty high resolution because the strange dot patterns they show are probably helpful clues as to what is going on here. The images are now all available for download from my Dropbox and the links are provided below.

I recently purchased a used Epson 9880 which had problems with the vivid magenta channel during the nozzle check. In the process of trying to clear it, I did several head cleanings, a careful cleaning of the capping station, wiper arm and the other spongy block to the left of the wiper arm (name?). I also did an underhead cleaning using windex and Bounty paper towels. When I printed a new nozzle check, I got the results shown in Figures 1 - 3.

Figure 1: https://www.dropbox.com/s/qx54ml4t714kpe3/figure%201.tif?dl=0
Figure 2: https://www.dropbox.com/s/dlnpu7jc0b6tc7k/figure%202.tif?dl=0
Figure 3: https://www.dropbox.com/s/xcvham8w3wbjvbu/figure%203.tif?dl=0

Figure 1 is a lower resolution view of a whole piece of the nozzle check output, and Figures 2 and 3 are closeups of the right edges of the top and bottom lines respectively. The strange pattern overlaying the nozzle check image is clearly visible. These pics were shot with a Nikon D800E, but close enough to the printout to avoid any moire effect. Therefore the moire effects visible in the images are not artifacts of the copying process. The similarity between the two right edges is striking and seems to suggest a firmware issue, (to me anyway).

Figure 4 shows a third line of the printout which occurs from border to border but only if the printer is set NOT to cut the printout off the roll. If the printer is set to cut the printout, this line disappears completely.

Figure 4: https://www.dropbox.com/s/eb38dul7g5wtspc/figure%204.tif?dl=0

Since there are numerous lines apparent throughout the printed bands, I attempted to perform a head alignment. However, when I initiated it from the Epson remote control pane, the printer started to print a black line using so much ink that the ink was running off the page. See Figure 5. So I paused the print, wiped off the excess ink with kleenex and ejected the page.

I then attempted to initiate a head alignment from the printer panel, but again the printer  began to print a very dense black band, though the ink was not dripping down as before. I realized that the Epson firmware would never be able to detect the alignment pattern in this band, so I terminated the print.

Anybody got any ideas on this? It certainly does not appear to be a typical head blockage problem. I would greatly appreciate any thoughts you may have on this and I thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

This is an extract from Figure 1 showing the problem. Any ideas at all, folks?

This is a weird one. The most likely source of the problem is an electonic problem is the printhead. Did you uninstall the head to clean it?
It's a little hard to tell from the picture which channel is misfiring. Is it a grey, black, or cyan ink? Or a mix?

Just in case it's a firmware issue (unlikely), did you try uploading the firmware? Did you try power cycling the printer? Unpluging the power cord while the printer is on?

Also very unlikely, but it could be a damper issue. If a damper valve stays open too long, it would send pressurized ink to the head and ink would spray out uncontrolably. But I can't think why your cleaning procedure would have caused a problem in a damper.

Try printing from QTR to see if the problem persist: http://lucbusquin.com/content/purge-all-epson-x900-ink-channels

But I'm afraid the printhead is just toasted.

Damaged/worn FFCs (flat flexible cables). They are split/damaged and causing the head to misfire.
