Converting to CMYK
« on: March 15, 2006, 11:25:51 pm »

Does anybody know the best way for me to convert my images to CMYK for output on a 4 color postcard? I know it won't be the same but the less I damage my image, the better.

I assume I'll do all editing in RGB however. Is that right?

Also, does anybody here have any recommendations as far as best printers for postcards?

Thanks for the help,
Eli

I would edit in RGB, then convert to CMYK (in the PS "Mode" menu), and then touch up the editing if needed.

I have used Modern Postcard and have been pleased with their care and results (www.modernpostcard.com). They will send you a free color management kit on request that helps you calibrate your monitor and assign a printer profile specific to thir printers. Their website has much detailed information about how to setup each aspect of the project.

I have also heard recommendations for 4over4.com, but I have not tried them.

The best way is to have an ICC profile that defines the process used. Not always easy to get but try. Ask the printer if they have an ICC profile you can use or what print process they use. Many shops will say "we print SWOP" but that's not always the case. It's one of those 'easy answers' heard from prepress shops. Whatever you do, get a contract proof before the job goes to press.
