I have visited a small and artisanal factory producing bread, last week.
I was with some friends who were very pleased to see.
I asked the bakers if I could come back to make a Photographic Project under the theme of "doing bread". They agreed. Good !

The title and the process are not yet fine tuned as this is just a first approach to the work.
I hope to come at the end, to some 12 to 15 images of the hole process.

It will not be "doing bread" but more simply "Bakery" or "Bakeries" not sure.

Another bakery. 30 kms from home.
Two young men work till 4 in the morning ! Hard work. I came home at 0 h.
Now, with flash. Hard work for me also because they were always moving around. However, I got some nice pictures for this project.
Slowly, I am building the set. I want to reach 20 great images.
I do the images and redo them, over and over. I compare. I trash and regret the next minute.
The files are huge. Need a new Mac. Retina Display. Too much money.
When I have enough to work on the photo, I go away.
I look and I see. Sometimes I look and I don't see. Later, I look and I see. Sometimes I never see, just look.
I am having fun ! LOL
Wait for more. They will come some day ! God bless the 14 mm !

Lovely work António. Very nice black & white processing: Do you mind me asking what software you are using for the b&w conversion?

Also enjoyed looking at you website.

This is a very beautiful sample. I look forward to more from this series.

My wife and I very much appreciate good, artisanal bread. There is a woman who baked wonderful bread about 160 km from where we live. Whenever we find an excuse to get out that way, we phone in an order for a few loaves and pick it up at the local general store.

I will be eagerly watching for more of your series.

Sure Graeme ! Why not ?

I use LR, Nik Software and Photoshop.
LightRoom is just to manage the photographs, Nik Software to work then - it doesn't mean that I do not use LR also - and CS just to make the canvas and place text.
Recently I bought Affinity but I use very little because I am lazy.

But the most important aspect of treating photographs resides in our own eyes. With time I fine tuned them to deliver a consistent and coherent look. Well... at least that is what I try.

Thanks for the info António. I completely agree with you about the importance of developing a good eye for processing.

For the last 3 or 4 years I've been using Lightroom for my B & W conversions but am curious to try other options as I would like to improve my B & W. At the moment I'm trying to work my way through Vincent Versace's 'From Oz to Kansas'.

Those are lovely monochrome images and reward you the more you look at them. Not only are they technically good the composition in each of them seems very well thought through. Congratulations and I too look forward to seeing some more.

Graeme, the books I have bought, I have read them in diagonal.

Google is a great source of knowledge with the obvious precautions.
LR makes very good black and white convertions. I think it is a question of the eye. It all comes to it.
In LR as you know, you can use presets which at the end, is much the same as Nik.

I will keep posting some works with variations as these are studies, but studies very near to final work.

Looking at just these photos, the careful seeing and sensitive processing suggest to me that they were taken by someone who has spent years using a view camera on a tripod, but your website doesn't mention any cameras that aren't usually hand-held.

This is deeply seen, beautiful work!

Indeed I have never used large format cameras and I always used 35mm cameras. However, I made some photographs when I was a young boy using my father's Rolleicord but was 350 years ago.

I have just used Pentax Spotmatic, Nikon F and recently Canon.

Now I moved to Panasonic m4/3 so I am more comfortable with the equipment having a wide range of lenses and not complaining of weigh.

With this perspective in mind I got a Panasonic GX7 with 20mm (40) lens Panasonic, a 15mm (30) lens Panasonic/Leica, a 42,5 (85) lens Panasonic/Leica, a 7-14 Olympus (14-28) with which I have done these photographs. I am planning to get the 12-40 from Olympus also. But later on... And this will complete my toys.

I use Canon flashes with a cheap trigger. No TTL is available but I do not care !

Very much enjoy your series and your style of work. What is that processing called, a type of sepia? As Eric said, the images have an intimate look with the subjects and environment.
