Darned web page popups!
« on: September 01, 2015, 08:07:28 pm »

What is going on here? Many websites that I visit have popups. They wait until you start reading the webpage. then *bam*, it pops up in your face. Some try to sell you something. When I get rid of that one, frequently another pops up to replace the other one! It is interesting that there is no "No Thanks" buttons, and the on some websites, the "X' closure button has been made very.very small. I  boycott websites who hijack their own webpage in this way. It does not make any sense to me. Why make life difficult for those who make the effort to visit their own website? Counterproductive. Offensive. And the double popups are nothing less than obnoxious.

No thank you! There are many other less offensive websites out there that are worth visiting.

Bob

PS I have not found a web browser that eliminates these popups

Hi Bob, are you sure that you don't have some type of malware that's hijacking your browser?

Later,

Another vote for Adblock. Without it I would stop using my PC altogether (except for processing photos, of course).

Are the popups related to the site itself or random adverts for other companies?

TBH I think the web is scurrying up its own backside in trying to be clever. Advertising online was always touted as the next big thing, well now it's here it's being realised that it doesn't actually work that well so web developers are desperately attempting to prove they still have a role in life by coming up with ever more annoying ways of slapping you in the face with an advert. Meanwhile, having been grievously injured by all this malarky the printed media is struggling to retain its revenue stream, not because it's not useful or doesn't work, but because marketing types are terrified of appearing old fashioned by returning to it.

I should point out that I have an interest in this debate.

Unlikely, I think the OP is referring to the sites that have their own pop ups and these don't get stopped by Ad Block either. They usually ask if you need help with their site, would you like to subscribe to their site or can you do a survey when you've finished.
A complete annoyance I agree.

The one thing you need to keep doing is filling in the surveys with "I hate being asked to do a survey and won't ever use your company" then they might get the message we don't like this style of site.
