Black Bars in Lightroom CC 2015
« on: September 01, 2015, 02:54:19 pm »

Hi
Since last Friday I have been getting black bars on the top and bottom of  image previews during Import.  If the image is portrait the black bars are on the side, if landscape on the top and bottom. I have attached a screen print showing the problem. Please don't judge it's artistic merit as it is only for illustrative purposes. This only happens during Import, and I have tried 2 different cameras and 2 different readers. And the black bars do not carry over into the library. I'm using a Mac pro with OSX 10.10.5 I would really appreciate any insights. I'm desperate. I spent 4 hours on the phone with Adobe to no avail. Please help if you can. .

thanks for looking
Jim

What do the images look like after you've imported them?

What aspect ratio are the images you're importing?

What version of Lr are you using?

I just looked at my LR CC 2015, and it shows similar - albeit thinner - black bars to what you have.  I only see it on NEFs, not on RW2 (Panasonic m43) or ORF (Olympus m43).  JPEGs don't show it either.  So I suspect it's a crop difference between the embedded JPEG in the NEF file and the actual raw data.

Thanks very much for replying to this post. I'm using the latest version of Lightroom CC 2015. The images seem to be OK once they are imported. And, I'm using the same aspect ratio as I always have been. Sorry to betray by ignorance, but I'm not sure how to change the aspect ratio in LR

Thanks for replying. This is a recent phenomenon and it also shows on jpeg. It never did this prior to last Friday. Everything was fine, no bars.

Hmmmm.... I've tried to recreate what you're seeing in the import images but I haven't been successful.  I am running Lr CC 2015 on Mac OS 10.10.5.  I've tried different aspect ratio images and everything looks fine.  I've looked through Lr settings to see if there's something that might affect this but no luck so far.

Just another Adobe mystery at this point.

Did you recently set a crop mode in your camera?

The reason I ask is that your cells are 4:3 Aspect Ratio. Your Images occupy a 16:10 Aspect ratio. Not knowing your camera model-that is my best guess.

Before you go too much further into a problem that only shows in the Import window but not in the actual raw file, I suggest resetting your preferences.

Have a look at these two links before you do. (The 2nd includes additional info for LR CC/6)

If the thread above contains a clue, it appears that it is a setting in the cameras not in LR.

No I've used a couple different cameras. 4 different compact flash cards. 3 different CF readers including a new USB 3.0 reader and USB 3.0 expansion card.
The odd thing is if I copy the image to my desktop and then import it does not have the bars during import.

I don't have an answer, but I noticed this last fall with my D810 files.  It just started and only on import.  This was 5.71 LR.

When I moved to CC, I lost the catalog, well, it got a bit corrupted.  When I pulled a back up and finally got that to work, the black bars were gone.  I am running win7 64 bit.

My card reader is the Lexar USB 3 reader, model LRW300U Rev 3.

Thanks for replying Paul. Yes I too have re-built my catalog. But I still have the black bars, but only on import.

I hope not. I'll get to the bottom of this ...somehow.
