Spyder 3
« on: September 01, 2015, 06:27:38 am »

I've just upgraded my computer, I've been using a Spyder 3 for colour calibration. Am I screwed or is there a software solution?

Cheers,

I'm assuming 'your screwed' because Datacolor doesn't support whatever operating system you now have or something else?

You could use ArgyllCMS and dispcalGUI or you can purchase something like BasICColor but the issue w/ a purchased solution is that they're not much less expensive than simply replacing the S3 w/ something more 'modern' like a S5 or i1DisplayPro or ColorMunkiPhoto.

Bugger! So what should I replace my Spyder 3 with?

At the moment I'm just posting to the web. I don't need anything fancy but my MacBook Air has been driving me crazy!

Like I said, you could use Argyll/dispcalGUI.  The only current devices worth talking about are Spyder5, XRite Colormunki Display or XRite i1DisplayPro (and the Spyder5 is 'meh' at best).  Laptop displays are tough to calibrate well or so variable that calibrating them is fairly fruitless, including the MBA.

Just for giggles, have you tried the built-in software/human calibrator on the Mac (via SysPref -> Displays -> Color)

I've just bought a new 21" iMac, I'm only posting to the web. At the moment I think it is about what is my audience, I post on LuLa and on Facebook. I'm thinking meh! Lots of things look funky on the internet!

The good news I guess is that Spyder 3 didn't work anyway. You may as well buy 4 or 5 or whatever you want. These will correctly adjust the screen brightness.
