Save for web
« on: August 30, 2015, 01:34:21 am »

I'm a longtime Photoshop user, if I want to post something online I use "Save for web".

I've just bought a new computer and upgraded my software, suddenly "Save for web" has disappeared and "Export" has appeared. What's up?

Cheers,

What's up?

In a word "Up-grade". You're in good company.

From past discussions there's some folks not liking this "Export" thingy.

I've suggested they hunt down "Image Processor..." in Bridge tools menu if that hasn't been dropped or moved in subsequent upgrades. I'm still using CS5.

I sure wish Adobe folks would explain what was wrong with "Save For Web" where they had to replace it with "Export".

Thanks, my opinion is why try to fix something that is not broken. I keep finding minor changes to things that I've been doing for years. Not happy! Apple seem on this strange path too, but hey Microsoft have lost the plot.

Presumably the change was made to avoid (new) user confusion because you may want to save a file for some other purpose other than web use, something that the tool allows you to do. The same tool in Lightroom is better but but be warned it's still called "Export". ;)

They could have Save for web and Export. Cropping now drives me just as crazy.

The new Export module is simply not finished, it lacks a whole bunch of critical features. It strips all metadata and even worse the icc profile, and there's no way to include either. Why they were in such a rush to implement this premature child is a mystery.

Statements from Adobe staff (on the Adobe forum) imply that this will eventually come. In the meantime use SFW, which is now tucked away under the main Export menu. The good news is that old actions using SFW still work without modification.

Thanks for the support, hey I've been using "Save for web" for a long time, why change something that has been a long established standard?

So that they can charge more money for it as an 'upgrade'.

If you don't like what they're doing, vote with your wallet.

Save for Web is still around, just moved.
Yes, Export needs a lot of work.

That observation reminds me of the time I had to resort to using Windows at my local library after being away from Window UI for at least 9 years. Can't remember what upgrade version it was but this one no longer had the Start menu in the lower left corner and no basic printer icon button in the bottom desktop menu bar or in the drop down menu in Microsoft Word. I was totally lost and all I wanted to do is print a one page document.

Had to have a 13 year old library volunteer helper show me that all basic functions were now accessed by clicking on this Electric Light Orchestra logo looking button in the upper right corner of the desktop that had no name or identifier as to what it was or did.

I don't really mind them changing it - SFW is apparently based on the old ImageReady code, and tended to be slow on the large files we usually work with today. So a more streamlined and modern version is fine with me.

All I ask is that they finish the job before shipping, which they clearly haven't this time. Maybe it's because they need to have a certain number of New Features with every major PS release.

Updating a computer is always a pain. I think this time my problem has been, why change well established professional standards?
