Why no ultra wide primes (8mm) for micro 4/3?
« on: August 23, 2015, 05:14:04 pm »

I'm window shopping all the lenses on the B&H website for the Olympus E-M1, and I noticed something peculiar. There are no ultrawide (7mm or 8mm) prime lenses available? There are plenty of fisheyes, but no ultra wides.

Why is this?

I am very happy shooting my Panasonic 7-14mm f/4 (14-28mm equivalent in ff). Olympus just brought out their f/2.8 version a few weeks ago. Olympus also has a 9-18mm though it is slower. I think there's also a couple of primes from Voiglander, Kowa and Samyang that are primes in the "ultra wide" range. Olympus also makes a 12mm prime and I think I've seen maybe a 10mm.

The primes are out there if you search, but I can tell you my 7-14mm is one fine lens!

There is no prime wider than the Voigtlander 10.5mm.  When I said ultra wide I meant 7mm or 8mm non-fisheye.

Don't know, but I'd love to have one, and I have the 7-14 F4.

You could easily adapt one of these, but they are $30,000.  Covers APS-C also.

There is one.

8.5mm f/2.8

Otherwise I also miss small uwa primes. I have a small hope that Olympus might present something now that their pro zoom lineup is almost complete.

I just found a 10mm Rokinon on B&H. So, between the Kowa and this, there are two.
