Clyde Butcher PS technique?

Could someone please explain in a bit of detail how Clyde is working his images in PS, as seen on LLVJ 14? The point I don't understand is how he selected the area he wanted to "multiply"? He works with the negative, creates a quickmask, but how does he select the area?
What a great segment by the way, beautiful images.

to me it looked like he was selecting using a circular gradient.
