Spyder 5
« on: August 18, 2015, 04:44:01 am »

Have anyone tried the new Spyder 5 calibrator. I got two test units from Datacolor. I did a test where I used Basiccolor to calibrate and validate my wide gamut monitor with a Basiccolor Discus. I then redid the validation with those two units. The first showed a very similar result, compared to the validation with the Discus. The difference was about ΔE = 1,5 on an average. However, when I tried the second unit I got a difference of about ΔE =  6 and the yellow patches showed a difference between the Discus and this unit of more than ΔE = 12.

I would like to try out more units, to see if this was a one faulty unit only or if the Spyder 5 has a variance between different units that is so high. I recently had an opportunity to test 9 i1Display Pro and they were very stable, with a variance of less than ΔE = 2 between the different units.

Hi Stefan,

I tested 2 Spyder5 units on NEC PA242W (GBr LED backlight) using JETI Specbos 1211 as a source of reference measurement. Both Spyders were in the forest, and the inter instrumental agreement was poor:

Marcin,

What charting software is that?

TIA,

The 'buzz' isn't good between these posts and the this fellow who's getting poor results with his Spyder 5:

Would a custom matrix made with ArgyllCMS' CCXXmake  + Dispcalgui as the software driver be a remedy in this case? A friend has a Spyder and I could help him with the necessary reference instruments. Just one monitor to calibrate and profile then. Not a solution for all Spyder buyers of course.

Met vriendelijke groet, Ernst

Sure Ernst, correction matrix should help. It only should be individually created for specific device, as it seems there's still poor inter instrumental agreement in Spyder5 units.

As I understand,
x-rite (i1display) = i1 display pro?

Or not?

These results do not surprise me at all. Based on my experience with SpyderPrint, I deduced that there must be a major quality control issue. My step-by-step experience with this colorimeter has been documented. In the end, this device was reading one color as a totally different color! Even when there were back-to-back calibrations! Since this device has a very mixed review by many, I had determined that it must be a QC problem.

Yes, X-Rite (1) and (2) rows are i1Display Pro results.

I recently bought the Spyder5 Pro (because B&H had a Special on them for just $80!) purely for use on my MBP.

Up until now, I have always simply profiled the Retina with Apple's display utility and "matched" the MBP Retina  screen by eye  to my Spectra-profiled NEC. That was frankly good enough for a machine which I only use while travelling.

The profile and calibration produced by the Spyder displays a ProPhotoRGB image in Photoshop on both the MacPro and the MBP Retina  which are visually dead-ringers to each other so the Spyder 5 can't be that bad.

However, I did download the most recent Spyder 5 Pro software from the manufacturer's site so perhaps they have improved it in the newest upgrade?

IF your SpectraView and your MBP match, you need a SpectraView replacement ASAP!  :o
And yeah, the Spyder is that bad, certainly the samples properly tested and evaluated colorimetrically by Czornyj.

By "match", I mean WB, contrast and brightness look extremely similar on both the NEC and on the MBP.

The Spyder5 has done a very acceptable job profiling my MBP Retina which I use only for travel and for being able to show my photographs to others with reasonable confidence.

I do not print from the MBP and nor do I do serious final editing of RAW files on it, and the inexpensive Spyder5 is proving perfectly adequate for my purposes.

If you need to profile and calibrate a Printer, that would be a different matter — but I do not need to do that on this machine.

Short history: Five years ago I bought and used Color-Intergated's ColorEye to calibrate my monitor. Updated it three years ago. Now it won't launch nor even recognize me as having an account, and I've not heard back from them (yet). After poking around CE's site, my guess is (if I do hear from them) they'll tell me to update for $100. Time to move on.

I've researched ColorMunki (which has crash & lack of support complaints), this site (as of today) where there are complaints about Spyder issues and lack of support, and the open source calibration software (which has a technical how-to doc a mile long). I don't want to spend over $200 for the iDisplay.

What I DO want is a dependable device/software combo that will allow me to calibrate my OEM iMac 21" and Dell 24" Ultrasharp 2401 with relative ease from a company that will support me if issues should arise. Some adjustable flexibility is a plus.

I understand that no product is perfect (certainly no computer-related ones), what product do you recommend?

Thanks for any and all help.

get an XRite Display Pro and use it's included software or Argyll software.  You can buy other software (like BasICColor Display) if you really want to but not needed.
