Rockcliffe
« on: August 16, 2015, 05:48:25 pm »

This is Rockcliffe in SW Scotland, 10 miles West of the birthplace of John Paul Jones. I am unsure how dark to make this image. A very short lived sunset, 10 minutes after this shot and the light disappeared.

Lovely image Ken, I think the lightness is fine and a nice composition.

I agree with Eric: it's beautiful as it is.

I did have to look up John Paul Jones, I confess.

It's certainly a beautiful image.  I'd love to see it, side by side with another copy `opened up' perhaps half a stop, to be able to compare the two.  That said, you were there and can best determine what reflects the moment/experience/mood.  When you're happy with it, then it's as it should be! :)

The first shot was processed on my laptop and the colours look off on this wide gamut monitor, I will redo it soon. This one was taken a few minutes earlier. 5 shot merge. Nikon D810 Samyang 14mm tripod and wellingtons. I went out to shoot the heather in the Galloway Forest but I should have known better than try and take evening shots on a calm evening in August without wearing a head net, long sleeved shirt and thin gloves, the midge infests Southern Scotland almost as badly as the Highlands but at least the coast is free of the little darlings.

Lovely photo! I am curious about your 5 shot merge. Was this for exposure, DOF, something else? Also, that Samyang is pretty darn sharp.

Hi thanks for the comments.

Bob 5 shots just to ensure that I could gather all the info without blocked shadows or blown highlights. I am unlikely to be able to get back here in The same conditions, extreme low tide that allowed safe walking on the mud flats. This small village is usually not photographed from "out in the bay". The Nikon D810 is new and I am still unsure just how much I can lift shadows and still get virtually noise free images so +/- 2 bracketing was to be on the safe side. As a matter of interest I have done a 5 minute process of just one exposure and apart from a slight colour balance difference it is difficult to say which I prefer. I have not removed the flare on this shot. More to follow.

Personally I think the rocks are a tad light but that is my taste. The image is fine and I am a sucker for sunset shots.

I am a sucker for non-blown suns. Good one.
