epson 2400 oily spots on enhanced matte
« on: March 06, 2006, 05:09:50 pm »

On epson enhanced matte my 2400 printer leaves spots that can be seen if the light on the print is directional.  The spots are transparent, but have a sheen on the surface.  If the light isn't directional they aren't visible.  They only appear on the black portions of the print.

This is quite noticeable with 8.x11 paper, but when I switch to 13x19 paper it is much less noticeable.  This leads me to think that there is a problem with the paper.

It doesn't occur with HWM or premium glossyor Ilford lustre.

I can't get rid of it by changing the ink configuration.  My vendor who is in another town ignores my emails.

Anyone else run into this?

My vendor hasn't been ignoring me they were talking with epson who thought I might be using PK ink, but no I'm using MK ink.  There is a small thread on DPReview of people who are having the same problem.  The serial number on my 8.5x11 box is 05hh4005m04.

I have gone through many boxes of letter-sized EEM on my Epson 2200, and I have never experienced the problem you describe. It sure sounds like a bad paper batch to me.

Using my R2400 with Matte papers since purchasing the printer a few months ago. No problems at all.

Print quality is much better than the 2200 the R2400 replaced.

It's not a bad paper batch. My 2400 does the same thing. I have posted about this on dpreview and have yet to see anyone come up with a particularly good answer. This particular effect happens with NO other matte surface that I've used (Epson Heavyweight Matte, Watercolor Radiant White and Velvet Fine Art, Ilford Fine Art and Heavyweight Matte). Reducing ink density in the driver does seem to help somewhat, but it doesn't eliminate the problem.

Because there are other matte papers that I like better, I don't use EEM very much, but it would be nice to know why this happens to how to make it stop .
