Excellence is never out of date. If you can afford the L, get it.

Er maybe not -- some of us were cheap and bought the Canon 35mm f/2 before the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 was announced.

Things I like about the 35mm f/2 (although you didn't ask): it's small, light, and inexpensive compared to the 35mm f/1.4.  For sharpness photographing small children in low indoor light, I expect the limits are my handholding technique and the ever present subject motion.

The thing I don't like about the 35mm f/2 is the buzzy autofocus.  In practice though subject noise helps to cover this up too, when the the subjects are small children in motion indoors.

I'm looking for a fast prime lens for a 20D to compliment a Canon 24-70/2.8L, mostly for indoor, available-light shots of my children (who are always in motion). The two lenses I am considering are the Sigma 30mm/f1.4 ($400 USD) and the Canon 35mm/f1.4L ($1150 USD). Many reviewers call the Canon the best lens they have ever used. Others say that it is out of date and the Sigma is a better match for the 20D and other DSLRs. Anyone have any experience with the lenses?
