Photos from the train
« on: August 03, 2015, 01:29:29 pm »

I've started taking my camera to work, just in case something presented itself on the walk from railway station to office. But it hadn't occurred to me to take photos from the train, yet the light over the Somerset Levels / Sedgemoor is often superb when I'm travelling, early in the morning, or later in the evening. Of course, the choice of viewpoint is limited, but opportunities are there.

Super! Most would dismiss the photo op because they are on a train. By not letting circumstance get in the way, you are finding something new from probably a POV that others have not found.

My friend in Ohio prefaces his posts on Facebook with the tag line: Art is Everywhere, with most of his neat photos taken with an iPhone.

Keep it up and perhaps this could be a series, portfolio, exhibit or book.

+1 to all of the above.

Certainly the viewpoints are often only really accessible from the train, so it is quite likely that there's not too many others photographing these views

Love them. But - would be even better to see the English green!

Rajan, there wasn't much green, just mainly dark grey skies

I love these. The first is my favorite. Beautiful composition, nicely moody.

I have a couple of times tried photographing from a train, but never got anything that I would post to LuLa yet.

The other day my son sent me a jpg of a photo he took on a train ride, and it is very nice and also well-composed.

So I'm quite envious of you and of my son, Bill!

Beautiful, Bill. Walker Evans sometimes used to shoot from trains I've always wished I could try it, especially here in the western U.S. where railroads boldly go where no car has gone before, to bowdlerize the Star Trek motto.

Very nice. I have tried it on the West Highland journey to Oban or Mallaig, in Scotland, but was lucky to get a few keepers. Reflections from the lights in the carriages were a problem as well as dirty windows. My "best " effort.

Arrochar at the head of Loch Long. Lots of trees block the view so I was lucky to get this one. Bill you could start a thread about photographing from trains.

Nice work - and don't forget to be on the alert when the train is stopped in the stations along the way. Lots of human interest stuff may be on offer there.

Yes, in the same vein as other threads such as Clouds and Rocks which had a huge following.

So I guess that means you are inviting us all to get on the train and post some results here. Good.

Seems like you stepped into an Alfred Hitchcock movie and took few snaps--nice and moody.

This could make for a great series--even a book.
