Cropping and resizing
« on: March 02, 2006, 08:09:38 am »

I normally crop my pictures as soon as they are out of RAW conversion.  I'm using CS.

I want to make a series of A3 prints - considerably larger than the file I import.  When I crop, I have no control of resampling.  I just produce a 12x16 @ 300ppi that comes in around 80 megs (16 bit mode).  The original PSD is somewhere under 30 megs.

Should I import from RAW at the highest setting available to produce a bigger file?  Should I crop using Image Size instead?  Is it possible to set the interpolation method for the crop tool?  Is it possible to set the crop tool to do nothing more than change the aspect ratio of the image so that I can resize it with Image Size (my preferred method).

Why doesn't PS come with a mind reading plug in

Thanks

Charlee

I don't use the crop tool, but instead do cropping in PS using the "rectangular marquee" tool to choose the portion I want to crop to, and then using the Crop command in the Edit menu (if I'm remembering correctly where it is...); that way doesn't resample.  Then I use "Image Size" to resize and/or resample.

There is no need to up-size with ACR and the crop tool uses the resampling type you set as default in the PS options.

Simply crop the image to the dimensions you want leaving the resolution field blank and that will set the crop without resizing. Then in the next step upsize the image to the dpi you need in Image Size.
