Best solution to store large, rolled up prints?
« on: July 26, 2015, 09:55:12 pm »

Hey Everyone,

I have several large prints, rolled up. I'm wondering what the best way to store them is? I have a long, narrow closet space dedicated for storage.

Right now, they are simply resting on top of each other. There are some that are rolled up inside of each other.

Obviously, this makes it difficult to identify which roll contains which image.

Any experts out there, I can use some help. What is the best way to store my prints? Is there a good way to catalog them as well? Perhaps some sort of paper tape marking whats on the print?

Any help is much appreciated.

Tubes.. you gotta get tubes.  Then you can stack them on top of eachother without worry they will crush, and you can write on the cap.  You can either get them from uline.com, or just save the tubes from what the paper is rolled on, but it takes a while to build up sufficient stock.

Hey Landscapes,

Thank you. That looks like a good solution.

Question: Do you wrap the prints in any kind of protective paper before inserting them into the tubes?

Also, do you store the tubes vertically or horizontally?

I would say it depends on paper.  If it was a fragile matte surface, I would for sure want to put some paper over top... but most of the stuff that I store is canvas that has already been coated, so I have no problem.  I store mine horizontally, all lined up in a row, and few stacked on top of each other.  It would kind of look like the picture below.

i would suggest leaving them rolled is not the best thing to do with them

when it comes to framing and displaying them, the longer they have been rolled the less likely to go flat they are

For inkjet prints, glassine paper works well on top of your prints.  I use glassine paper on top of prints and before rolling prints when shipping to photographers and artists.

I would like to post A2 or A1 prints (Ilford Galerie GFS) in tubes but don't know what minimum safe rolled up diameter is before print surface suffers, so hard to know what size tube to get, or whether there is a wide enough one available (in UK).

You're reasonably safe with 3" if only 2-3 prints, acid free tissue or glassine between the prints. As long as the tube is less than around 3', then can be posted by royal mail.

You can get 4 or 6" tubes from places such as Raja Pack, though not cheap.
