Mt. Saint Helen Haze
« on: July 23, 2015, 04:00:00 pm »

So I'm having trouble deciding whether full size, or 10x5 crop, or 15x5 crop suits this photo best.  Opinions/feedback?

I prefer the proportions of #2 but in #3 I like the way the hint of darker sky at the top emphasises the 'banding' in the sky to match the receding hills.
Overall #3

Difficult choice, but I believe I prefer the uncropped image.  I was about to vote for the third image, but found the bottom needs darkening a tad.  It could be, that the darker upper and lower portions of the uncropped image provides more depth overall, hence my preference.

Nice photo for sure!

All three work fine. My preference would be for shots that are more "grounded," so #3 and #1, in that order.

15x5 for me. This crop makes the tree line foreground more important as it reflects the shape of the hills behind. I find this crop helps draw my attention to the serrated tree tops as well. I don't find the wide swath of sky that interesting and it detracts from the nice shapes below.

.

Four things:

I think Slobodan's preference for the foreground is correct.

There is too much light space above the horizon, if you can create a mask and compress the sky you will get a more dramatic image.

The sky seems to have too much magenta in it  I'm not too sure what palette I would use for the sky but cooler seems better to my eye.

The rendering of the image should be your major focus.

This is just a quick and dirty rendering of your low res image on my 11" MacBook Air. Good luck.

I think #2 works best. I find the colour of the upper part of the sky odd.

How do you compress the sky?

Have A Nice Day.

I would take the third one and crop out the top half of the sky so the sky ends up being about 1/3 of the frame.
I also agree the sky is a little too purple but it's a nice image.

I like the purple sky, and tom_b has a really nice rendition of the image.
