These guys from pentax are a funny bunch. Offer a 18 MP camera with a release date to be announced later and an upway path up to 30 MP to be announced later.

They should do it right away, offering a 22 MP model and a 30 MP model. if they keep the price of 8 grand for the small one or a little more, they would sell alot of those.

Too much is unclear.  Is the upgrade to 30mp in one step, or a vague intention down the line?  How many intermediate stapes, and when?  Why stop at 30mp?  

18mp should still offer excellent performance, but its below the 22mp ZD, which is already being sold in discounted lens/body bundles in the UK.  Of course there is a lot more to a camera than pixel count.  Great to see Pentax offering a MF alternative.

That's been true of all the other MF backs and whatnot.  But if this one slots in where I think it should I might be able to scrape enough $$ together to buy it.

I actually feel very much the same way. But I just treated myself to a Canon 5D very recently, so I may need to save my pennies until the Pentax is up to 30MP before I lunge.

In the meantime I'll keep on digging for oil in my back yard.

The 18mp may be a super-reduced priced version of the camera.
MF manufacturers are trying to stop Canon and their next professional line of DSRL.
