New monitor and video card with 30 bit colour
« on: July 19, 2015, 01:32:53 pm »

I very recently upgraded my video card to a Quadro K620 and my monitor to an Asus PA249Q for use with Photoshop 30 bit display mode. I profiled my system with my trusy i1Pro. It works well and very smooth for colour but, none the less, I am confused

The K620 has a 10 bit LUT capability whereas the PA249Q has a 12 bit LUT. Is there any reason that the LUT depth of the monitor and video card must match? The even though the monitor has a 12 bit LUT, the specs state that it has 10 bit colour - this adds to the confusion.

How does the video card and monitor communicate information to agree on what is to be sent from card to monitor ?

I assume that Photoshop sends 30 bits of colour to the video card.  Aside from sync and control signals, what information for the RGB colour values is sent from the card to the monitor? Is this in 10 bit "bytes" for each colour? If so, how does the monitor digest this with it's 12 bit LUT but 10 bit colour?

What if one of the connected monitors has only an 8 bit colour and I assume 8 bit LUT and bit depth (like my old Benq).

I have not found anything on the internet to significantly help with these questions. I don't even know if my questions make sense.

As long as the entire path is high bit (more than 8-bits per color), that's what matters. The values don't all have to sync up. And every item in the path has to be high bit; OS (forget OS X), application, video card, display.
