5DS Camera Profiles using Colorchecker Passport
« on: July 09, 2015, 02:54:22 pm »

Tip:

I had an issue - the patches were recognized but the 'Create Profile' didn't work. X-Rite says their software cannot handle the full RAW files (> 50MB) currently. I then shot in mRAW and it worked.

Hello Aaron,

I don't understand your question. Perhaps I wasn't clear. The camera profiles were made for ACR and Lightroom using X-Rite's software. It worked after I shot the colour patches in mRAW, as suggested by X-Rite. Their software cannot handle the full RAW file from the 5DS as yet.

workflow using dcamprof ( http://www.ludd.ltu.se/~torger/dcamprof.html ) can, but then it is not a simple all in one GUI...

That's cool. So you're happy with the profile?

Yes. The difference between it and the Adobe Standard is noticeable.

Added: a poster on Fred Miranda claims, pace X-Rite, that generating a profile from mRAW and then using it on regular RAW is not a good idea.

There seems to be an issue in the xrite software and large image files.  For example, with Nikon D8xxx 36 Mpixel images, it won't create dual-illuminant profiles.  You have to set the camera to a lower resolution (crop mode) and then it works on those smaller images.

I'm not sure if this is the same issue, but if so then don't hold your breath for a solution from xrite.  They've known about the problem for 2 or 3 years, and told me more than a year ago that "it will be solved in a future software update".  It appears that their software update cycle is measured in decades.

Xrite is not known for it's high quality software, shall we say, nor for it's prompt handling of software problems.

I think that Aaron means to don't use X-Rite's software to make the camera profiles. Use Adobe's DNG Profile Editor to make the camera profiles.

Another option is to edit (decrease) the "Activearea" and/or "DefaultCropSize" tags' values in the 50Mp DNG file, with exiftool .. :)

Hi,

Adobe has program called Adobe DNG Profile Editor that does the same job as X-rites software.

Just to mention Anders Torger has a new tool called DCamProf that creates DCP or ICC profiles: http://www.ludd.ltu.se/~torger/dcamprof.html that may be worth looking into.

Best regards
Erik

What is the point of profiling in mRaw if you are going to shoot Raw?
My experience with ColorCheckR Passport is that it doesn't work well and on large files not at all. I had to go to SpyderCheckR

According to X-Rite, the profiles generated with mRAW will work with RAW. At any rate, it is surprising that they haven't updated their software since 2011.

Yes, they should work OK.
