Nikon 1 J5 test at DxO mark
« on: July 08, 2015, 06:08:04 pm »

It seems like the new J5 is using a Sony sensor:

Quite incredibly, the DR is in the same ballpark as that of Canon FF DSLRs, but the other KPIs are of course lower.

Image quality is now at the same level as the RX100 while offering interchangeable lenses. Combined with best in class AF, 20 fps and some of the unique lenses of the 1 system such as the 70-300, this is becoming a very appealing solution for some applications such as birding.

Cheers,
Bernard

Whoever is making the sensor, it strengthens the case that those of us who like a highly portable kit that can handle wildlife and nature close-ups are ever better served by ILC sensors with relatively small pixels (2.4 micron) and thus by smaller formats.  I am glad that Nikon finally added a "One System" lens longer than 100mm to exploit this use case.  A macro lens would be a nice flow-up.
