Hello from the high country, landscape + fireworks
« on: July 07, 2015, 01:03:10 pm »

I'm new here but have been lurking for a bit. Lots of nice work around this site, I thought I'd join in the discussion.
I love good landscape photography and there are many fine examples here.

I especially love catching a fleeting moment in a landscape. Often it's a sunset or sunrise but even more fleeting like lightning or less frequent like a lunar eclipse are preferred.

Here's one from our 4th of July celebration in Gunnison, Co this year. While most people watched from the park or around town, I climbed the mountain on the other side of the fireworks to get a different perspective to include town and the peaks to the North in my composition. I like the shot but I also see room for improvement. The time when there was enough light for the landscape was pretty short and I feel like I should have moved left a bit to put the fireworks closer (but not in) the center.

Any thoughts on this image or what could make it better?

Nice collection of subject matter (mountains, fireworks, town lights) and well-composed. I like the fireworks where you've put them. My only beef, and it's a major one, is the overly saturated blue sky. I would prefer a more natural presentation of the sky.

Thanks, and I think you are right that it's a little over-cooked. It was pretty blue but maybe not quite that blue.
But to show you where the image started here's one with only exposure raised by 1 stop in LR, no Color Efex Pro or other edits.

Welcome.

Good shot, and I think nicely framed. I would tone down the blue in the sky a bit, though.

Maybe the fireworks are a tad too close to the edge, but would certainly keep them well away from centre. And the blue of course

Other than that a very nicely conceived and executed picture.

Thanks for all the feedback! I'll probably re-do the processing before I print it paying attention to keeping those blues in check.
