No thumbnails - 5Ds on Win 8.1
« on: July 07, 2015, 10:50:23 am »

I just bought the new Canon 5Ds. So far, everything is great. Every major program I have that works with RAWs seems to show them just fine. My issue is with File Explorer, which I periodically use to find and preview an image before launching anything. There are no thumbnails displayed, just a generic graphic icon.

Has anyone else experienced this or know of a codec fix? I know I could just convert them to DNG or something, but I really don't want to at this point.

My own favorite pre-processing browser is Breezebrowser from Breeze Software. They update it frequently, so there's a good chance that it does 5Ds by now. I can't be certain, since I only go up to 5D2. If it works, it's very fast and easy to use, well worth the small price.

They do have trial versions available.

Yeah, I love BreezeBrowser as well. I've had it since the days of the D30. It's still a great browsing program and I still use it frequently, However, I need something ont ehsystem level as well.

The Mac operating system reads raw files. You see them as soon as you drag them in. AFAIK the Windows doesn't and never has. If you have seen preview in finder windows maybe it was because you were shooting Raw + Jpeg.

The FastPictureViewer Codec pack should allow Windows to display them.
