Moving Water, Grey County, Ontario
« on: July 05, 2015, 07:01:07 pm »

I was up in beautiful Grey County for a few days this week. Canada Day was overcast, sometimes misting - spectacular for the type of photography I was working on: moving water, waterfalls, gorges, etc. Here are three from the day.

All are made with a D800E w/18-35mm lens and polarizer on a tripod at ISO100. Processing was done using LR6.

The first - Beaver River - was processed using LR's HDR Merge. Very straightforward and successful, from my perspective. I noticed the merged file grew from 4x approx 40mb NEFs to 128mb DNG - there must be a lot of data stored in that DNG.

1-Beaver River: 18mm; ƒ11; shutter speeds ranged from 1/3 to 1/30
2-Boyne River: 18mm; ƒ11@0.8sec; EV-1/3
3-River Bank: 35mm ƒ11@1sec; EV-2/3

C&C welcome.

A fine set. I can imagine the second especially as a large print.

Very good set. I especially like #1, for the water rapids.

Second photo is also my favorite but they're all superb.

All excellent, as usual. I rather like the first as an abstract, with the top third cut off and just the swirling water in view.

The first is a great composition (others not close) and use of slower shutter for water... very much works...all the way around. I'm not sure the overall processing though is helping this...the harsh contrast takes away from the softness fo the water flows.  Not sure about that "color"...the brn(?) tones on my monitor as well... /B

I find this group very appealing, Terry, especially the first and second. The mood they evoke is just great. For whatever it might be worth, I like the first one even more when the highlights in the bottom two-thirds are pulled down a little.

A good example of a subject that is easy to shoot but hard to shoot well. Great composition and structure here, especially 2 and 3 IMHO.
