C1 and Leica S
« on: June 30, 2015, 06:51:21 pm »

I am contemplating a Leica S. My understanding is that C1 will support the DNG files but as a generic DNG file. I don't know enough about DNG to know whether that is a bad thing, but I'm assuming that it is. I really don't want to start using ACR again. I was never comfortable with the interface or the output, and LR is another place that I don't want to go.

Can anyone tell me whether C1 and the Leica DNG are the way to go. From my Hasselblad days, I remember that I could use LR but it was not as good as using Phocus. I really don't want to spend that much and then have second rate output, or have to use ACR.

Generic DNG means that the rendering may not be as good as a dedicated camera profile because they haven't calibrated for the camera. But it may still be a better job than the alternative.

I can only suggest you shoot some test shots and give it a try in both COP and a demo version of LR.

Thanks David. No C1 is a real show stopper. Same applies to the 645Z unfortunately. Back to the Nikon for me.

hi Jeff!

My understanding is C1 fully supports the native file type of the camera, in the case of the Leica that would be a DNG and you are golden. David Grover and Doug Peterson generously post here, am sure they would answer definitively. Also, it is fairly straight-forward to create profiles, can't imagine being anything less than thrilled with that camera and C1. I bet stunning.

Good luck + all best. Sean.

Thanks for the clarification, Sean - I hadn't thought to challenge the OP's assertion re COP support.

That said it's not obvious from the list of supported Leica cameras

https://www.phaseone.com/en/Imaging-Software/Capture-One/Supported-cameras.aspx?#camera=0345D7EB84E2420D8C91CD749A0636E1

that it is supported. I'm sure David or Dough will sort us out!

cheers

David,

David Grover has already answered elsewhere: http://blog.phaseone.com/eight-major-reasons-to-choose-capture-one-as-your-raw-converter/

Sean,

Thanks. That sounds too close to the bleeding edge for me. Unless C1 has full support, I'm not buying an S. The Pentax 645Z presents the same issue, as well as lenses. I have never liked the colour that I have got from Adobe. It's a personal taste thing. Phocus was brilliant, but lagging C1 in some features. I like the C1 UI, and especially the colour that I get.

Funnily enough, my D800 with adapted Leica R lenses produces very acceptable images that get better the more I use it. It's amazing how good the lenses are.

Jeff

It's not leaping out at me from that article whether the S is supported or not. But I'm not going to be buying one for the foreseeable. However I agree with the principle of wanting COP support before considering a camera - I'd be happier with my D300s and COP than my D750 and Aperture.

It is indeed simple, you can open S files in C1 no problem, I do it every day! There isn't the same profiling as you get with LR but especially for portraits, I find the results from C1 to be miles ahead of LR, even without dedicated lens profiles. There is a profile downloadable from the Leica website for the S files in C1 and it works but I have presets I use based on experimenting with files. It's definitely not as integrated as Nikon files for example but it's definitely useable.

Mat,

I'd be interested to know of any tips you can give us. I compared LR prints with CO prints and CO seems to render better results even without a dedicated camera profile.

Hi Jeff,

There are some comparisons of how C1 Pro opens CR2 files compared to a converted CR2 into DNG file.

Later I did another comparison using another curve for the ICC Profile and if I remember well it came out a bit better. It is a question of trying different adjustments.

For each camera there is the histogram of the image.
