Difference between forums

All,

What is intended to differentiate this forum - technical and aesthetic issues - from the User Critique forum - discussion about user submitted photographs?

Why do you critique photos posted in a forum intended for display?

Slobodan,

Why do you critique photos posted in a forum intended for display?

Example?

I may not be always attentive enough to notice in which forum something is posted, so this could be my bad.

Then again, while I am sure you'd disagree, I do not think that two words under a question mark constitute a critique. I am also more relaxed when interacting with a forum friend (which Mark certainly is), under assumption that I built enough goodwill (with him; hard, if not impossible to do with you ;)) to be forgiven for occasional  transgressions. And last, perhaps not least, there are no firm rules regarding the difference, but rather guidelines, which allows for certain flexibility.

Slobodan,

How does one discuss technical and aesthetic issues without offering a critique?

Example:

User Critique - I might say, referring to a particular image, something like: "Dodge here, burn there, crop, adjust this or that, etc."

This forum - we might discuss "technical and aesthetic issues" in more general terms, e.g., how appropriate photoshopping is for landscape photography, without referring to a specific photograph, or perhaps using it as a starting point.

People who want to hear a critique of their work and perhaps hope to benefit from advice there, will post in User Critique. Those who do not feel so and just want to display their work will post in this forum.

I personally post mostly in the User Critique forum for two reasons: 1. I oftentimes am interested in how others perceive my work, especially if I am playing with something new and 2. Given that I often critique others' works (which sometimes is not received well), I feel it is only fair to expose mine to the same treatment.

You go to extraordinary lengths to promote goodwill.

There are people who would attest to that, without the sarcastic undertone.

All,

What is intended to differentiate this forum - technical and aesthetic issues - from the User Critique forum - discussion about user submitted photographs?

I'm not sure exactly what is intended to differentiate them, but from observation of what actually occurs, what I notice is:

-A photo with a subject that does not seem to be either landscape or nature is more likely to be posted in the Critiques forum.

-A photo is more likely to be critiqued in the Critiques forum, but critiquing may or may not occur in either one of them.

Oh, one more observation to add via edit:

-Different but somewhat overlapping subsets of LuLa contributors seem to inhabit the two forums.

Think what a great place this would be if we all did so.

Privately you've thanked me for support and publicly it amuses you to snark about goodwill - it grows old.

If I misread the tone as sarcastic, my apologies.

I agree with Arlen on this.  Critique occurs in both of the forums.  I think it is sort of custom in this forum to invite critique if you would like it.  That removes the ambiguity.
